New list of SMSA Officers elected + Other news.

Ahoy SMSA Members:

Just a brief update of recent SMSA developments and current plans for the 2018 year.

At the recent Members meeting, new officers were elected as Commodore, Bob Rodak; Treasurer, Kathy Stonemark; Secretary, Beth Ramsey.

Plans are underway to promote the Seventh Annual Mountain Momma Hospice Regatta to be held August 17-19, 2018, the “Basics of Sailing” classes and a schedule of “Fun Sail Days”.  Dues were also addressed. Details below:

Seventh Annual Mountain Mama Hospice Regatta – Summersville Lake – August 17-19, 2018

In addition to the usual racing, auctions and music, we are planning to offer other family related activities for kids and landlubbers and food to be provided by Craft Kings.  MARK YOUR CALENDARS and invite your friends as the Regatta is open to the public.  We are hoping to make the biggest and best Regatta to date and will be looking for volunteers in the future who could lend a little help.  More information and registration details may be found on our website at www.smsawvorg .

·       Basic Sailing Classes – The one and only Bob Richards will again be offering free sailing lessons. One change, in order to deter no-shows, will be that a re-fundable registration fee will be charged and returned upon attendance.  Check our website for class dates and registration information.

·        Fun Sail Days – We are hoping to invigorate  participation in our scheduled “Fun Sail Days” and the sailing camaraderie they offer. Again, check our web site for the tentatively scheduled dates.  These dates, of course, are subject to change due to weather or other circumstances, notice of which will be posted and/or communicated by email and  these dates are certainly not definitive.   Members are encouraged to suggest other dates and/or other local sailing locations, either by email or on our Facebook page (Sewell Mountain Sailing Association of West Virginia). Any member interest in other SMSA sailing opportunities/dates will be entertained and promoted to the best of our abilities.  Remember, only member interest and participation in these endeavors make them happen.  Come on out and have some fun on the water with your sailing friends!

·       SMSA Membership Dues – After review of current and expected expenses, the Board approved a modest but necessary increase to the annual dues of ten dollars.  Membership dues for the current year will be $50.00 for an individual and $60.00 for a family up to four.  Again, please visit our web page www.smsawv.org to remit your current annual dues.

We are looking forward to a satisfying and fun year of sailing and camaraderie.  Hope you join us.  You can expect to receive additional emails in the future keeping you updated as to SMSA news, events and activities.  Also, please do not hesitate to make any suggestions you might have to make the association better serve its mission.

Hope to see you all this coming year.

Fair Winds,
Bob Rodak
Commodore

Picnic and sailing fun scheduled for Aug. 28

Members and friends of Sewell Mountain Sailing Association are invited to attend a Fun Sail Day and potluck picnic beginning at 9 a.m. Aug. 28 at the Battle Run picnic shelter, Summersville Lake.

SMSA will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, buns and paper plates. Attendees are asked to RSVP by Aug. 20 and contribute a covered dish, salad or dessert. You can reach Sandy Richards at 304-438-5035 to let her know you're coming, and what you're bringing.

If you'd like to join in a "white elephant" raffle just for fun, bring your contribution to Sandy Richards when you arrive on Aug. 28.

Some new members without boats, and some other interested newcomers, may arrive hoping to hitch a ride on a sailboat. Skippers willing to take on such ballast will be rewarded with extra good karma for helping us to introduce others to the pleasures of sailing.

We hope to see you (and sail with you) there!

Any questions? Comment here and we'll respond ASAP.

Hospice Regatta planning is underway!

Board members and hospice regatta volunteers, save this date! The Sewell Mountain Sailing Association regatta organizing committee will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 16 at the Shoney's Restaurant in Belle (at the Quincy Mall).

You need not be a member of the committee to come. In fact, we welcome anyone who would like to be involved in our sixth annual Mountain Mama Hospice Regatta, in late August at Summersville Lake.

See you there!

2016 Message from the Commodore

As we start the new year, I am struck by how far we have come as both a as group and an organization. We have faced challenges (becoming a fully compliant 501(c)3 charitable organization) to having a burgeoning membership and all the "growing pains" that come with it.
We are are the embodiment of the dream those core members who began SMSA had in mind for us. Of that, I am proud of each and everyone of you for answering the call when called upon for help, expertise and advice. I believe that 2016 has the potential to be the best year yet for SMSA,  and as we take a moment look ahead  SMSA has a lot to look forward to in the coming year.

We will again be offering free "Basics of Sailing" lessons during the Spring/Summer months at Corliss Pond. And thanks to the new website we launched last year, we now have a fairly full schedule already! ( we always find a way to get those who want to learn the opportunity to do so )
Our SVL Sail Days continue to be very popular with membership and we will continue to offer the fellowship that comes with sailing with friends and colleagues. This year, we are looking forward to including a couple of day long trips with a "pot luck" lunch as we explore even more of the lake.
We look to some "Shop Days" as Bob Richards looks to complete some restoration projects this Winter- He will post the times and dates as he can on FB.
(Please "Like" and "Share" SMSA posts with other members to keep our notifications active in your FB feed)
We've come to realize that some of our larger boats haven't been as popular as we thought they might be with our members, and as we continue to remain focused on the group as a whole; we are planning on "thinning the fleet" of them- more details later as they become available.
We have made great progress in building our "fleet" of 17' and under boats.
( The club will have a least 6 Sunfish ready to sail this year )
One of the things that was mentioned at our last business meeting was a desire to go to other lakes and sail different venues. I personally look forward to this as we have top notch lakes very close by that promise to be as fun and enjoyable as SVL.
Some of those that were mentioned are, Cave Run in KY, Tygart Lake in WV and Deep Creek Lake in Maryland.
We are looking forward to a special event that we've been trying to put together for a while now- A Sailboat Racing Clinic. Details to come, but we have the boats, we have a willing champion instructor and a location- we just have to finalize the plans before going completely public with it. ( So watch your emails.....)
All this would not be possible without your support of SMSA. Through membership, donations and volunteer spirit - The Sewell Mountain Sailing Association continues to grow and to thrive. This says a lot about the organization, but more importantly; It says a lot about you, it's members.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to greeting all that 2016 has to offer!

Clayton Spangler
Commodore/ SMSA-WV

It's that time again-the SMSA General Business meeting is open to all members- and we look forward to all who can attend as we elect SMSA officers, wrap up old business for the year and give a report on where we are headed in the future- which is going to be pretty exciting!

This election will take place after the check presentation to Hospice and the beginning of the Sewell Mountain Sailing Association's annual business meeting ( To be held Oct. 22nd at the Summersville Baymont Inn, 6:30 pm)

Notice of Hospice Check Presentation and SMSA Business Meeting

Ahoy!

It's been more than 6 weeks since the 5th annual Mountain Mama Hospice Regatta, and it's time to share the bounty with Hospice of Southern West Virginia!
(And talk about Sewell Mountain Sailing Association plans for the coming year at our annual business meeting- to follow after the check presentation)

We will also be holding SMSA Officer elections at the meeting as well.

We'd really like to see as many of you as possible at this meeting, both to share your thoughts about what we can do better and to assess how SMSA is meeting our members expectations- so spread the word!

We've set the check presentation and meeting for October 22 ( next Thursday) at the Baymont Inn in Summersville at 6:30 pm.

( Located : 903 N. Industrial Drive, Summersville WV 26651 )

Hospice regatta race results posted

Race results have been posted for the fifth annual Mountain Mama Hospice Regatta at Summersville Lake in Nicholas County, West Virginia.

Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers, sailors, sponsors and other donors who made this event possible. We'll be presenting a check to Hospice of Southern West Virginia in the next few weeks, and your varied contributions of time, energy and money will benefit many West Virginians in need.

Thank you, West Virginia!

Registration extended for Hospice regatta

The response to our online registration has been great for this year's Mountain Mama Hospice Regatta. Thanks to all of you who are already registered, the race committee's work should be a good bit easier this year.

It's going so smoothly, in fact, that we're extending the registration deadline a few more days until midnight Monday, Aug. 17. Then we'll have several days to import the data about you and your boats into the Sailwave scoring program (if all goes well, this will take minutes rather than days ... better safe than sorry).

So if you know anybody who's undecided about registering, encourage them to do it by next Monday and send them to this page for online registration. Registering at the last minute will be possible, but it may take a little more time and we know you'd rather be sailing.

Thanks for helping us to make the registration process more efficient.

Jeff Seager, Vice Commodore
